Review – Person of Interest – Pilot (S01Ep01)

Sunday, September 25th, 2011

Yes, you are being watched so don't go out in ugg boots, m'ok?

Post 9/11 the world changed. We are all now watched by CC TV, and tracked in our day to day lives. What if the patterns of our day to day lives gave away more than just suspected terrorism plots?

Jim Caviezel (though apparently he calls himself James now).
Michael Emerson.
Interesting concept.
Nice fight scenes.
Leg shots!
Love the cutaways – very uncomfortable.

Writing didn’t really build suspense.
Found it hard to get into it till about 20 mins.
Had trouble being empathetic to the characters.
Not sure I like the whole “cop trying to find the truth” arc – been there done that a gazabillion times. Given the premise it could have been a lot more interesting and menacing.
Discussed but didn’t address the loss of human rights to gain “freedom.”
Think it is going to be very formulaic.
No female lead.

For a pilot, it wasn’t bad – but it wasn’t great. It told me what was happening, what to expect from week to in way of episodes. It is enough to have me coming back for a few more weeks to see what happens, but not convinced yet.

Review – Fringe – Os (S03Ep16)

"You canno' break the laws of physics!"

This week:
Floating men found in Boston. Peter and Olivia are all “Summer of Love.” Walter is wearing his guilt poorly. Hurley got a job off The Island. William Bell.

Always fun to see Hurley (Jorge Garcia) though massively under utilised.
Interesting concept.

Peter and Olivia all smiley happy BS. You don’t want to be happy in a gritty SciFi drama – didn’t anyone tell them that?
Walter’s over inflated self importance/self blame.
One day Astrid will tell Walter to go eff himself.
Nina getting way too close to Walter.
The manifestation – oh please…. why that character and not someone like Hurley?
Very much a case of the week with little to move us forward.

Overall, I was quite disappointed in this episode. After last week’s outstanding episode, this one just didn’t stand up to Series Three standards. Bring on next week please.

Review – Battlestar Galatica – Season Two

And the bar of great scifi changes forever in Season Two during my favourite episode - Downloaded

This season follows our merry band of anti-heroes for the next 7 months (plus a year’s jump at the end of the season). This season also explores the Cylon perspective in more detail, changing the face of the show and taking the questioning of humanity to a whole new level.

Helo finally gets off Caprica.
Sharon replaces the whiny Boomer.
Cmdr Adama goes from one setting (hard) to two settings (hard and soft).
Kara gets her man.
Nice long season.
Up close and personal with the Cylons.
Admiral Cain.
Lee Adama’s development.
The journey to Hell is paved with good intentions that are quickly forgotten.
Minor characters move to the front.

Not nearly enough Leoben.
We get filler eps.
Billy goes bubbye.
Roslin getting her Mysticism on.
Lee Adama getting yet another promotion.
Madame Air Lock.
Roslin stealing the election.

Knowing as I do, what is coming, it is amazing how many things are mentioned, even telegraphed in this season. At the time of first viewing, of course, I was caught up in the journey. This time, yes the journey is highly engaging, but this time I can see the big picture.  Makes me realise just how much of a mishmash Lost was. You can see point after point that relates to where this is going, they knew.
